Can’t commit to the gym? Struggling to stay on consistent? Starting and quitting on your goals short after? The solution could be simpler than you think!
All my life, I’ve wished I can rely on my WILLPOWER. To get that project done on time, to eating the right foods, to stay consistent with a workout regimen, to keep the house clean, to stay strong while disciplining the kids rather than letting them do whatever they want (sounds familiar?)! I have a ton of friends that are determined and strong willed. I would watch them getting things done in life and making things happen for themselves with resilience. And I’ve always been the type to make excuses and cave in under pressure.
My ‘problem’ was FOOD! It was my go to resource to make all my problems go away! I could never say no to food and I drowned myself in it. I always went for the easy, readily available, carb and sugar laden food!
I knew it was a problem but I didn’t think to make changes until I WAS TOLD BY MY DOCTORS that I NEED to make changes. This need came when I got pregnant. My doctors warned me that to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy delivery, my nutrition MUST CHANGE! Easier said than done! So .. I remember crying a lot before and after doctor visits … I felt like I had no self control!
Now at age 36, and after 4 pregnancies, a ton of reading and practice, with MUCH energy and effort – I am no longer a sugar addict and carboholic. I know now how to lose baby weigh and to KEEP IT OFF.
It’s all about learning SELF CONTROL and realizing IT’S A PROCESS that may take a while! Best part is that it all starts with ONE DAY AT A TIME!
Of course, we live in a world where TEMPTATIONS surround us daily. It’s easy to say “I’ll jus thave this one cookie” just to turn around and have 10!
So what can YOU DO?
HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR WILLPOWER
- Self Control and Willpower are directly related to the amount of sugar (glucose) your body intakes and needs. When your sugar levels get low, you start needing more sugar. So you turn to the chocolate bar or cookie that are sitting in front of you without even thinking. But if you listen closer, you will realize, what your body really needs is a healthy snack! Such snacks can be nuts, blueberries, an apple! A healthy snack will save you from crushing on sugar again and you will find a more balanced mood! And when you feel balanced, you have easier time to exercise CONTROL and say NO!
- Another way to control your glucose levels is to stick to regular food intakes, 3 regular meals and 2 snacks – 2-3 hours a part with consistent intake of water as well. This will balance your glucose levels but it will also get your metabolism working all the time to process the food! You will feel healthier all around.
- Self Control also relates to level of energy! In other words, when you are tired, you have much less self control and you find yourself getting more agitated and upset. This is also an effect of low blood sugar. So revisit #1 and #2! Revisit also your sleeping schedule! Sleep recharges the body and gives us energy so I know when I am sleep deprived, I am very short on WILLPOWER! Don’t beat yourself up, just be aware that sleep is what you need, not that donut, and calm your anger down while you lay your eye to rest next to the playing baby on the floor!
- Learning Self Control takes time and determination so don’t attempt to change numerous bad habits at once. For example if you are trying to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time, you will have hard time, unless you approach resolving each bad habit separately. You can then make gradual changes that will produce lasting effects.
I started by changing my exercise regimen first. Once I got a good groove on and felt more energy and strength, I moved on to make changes in my nutrition. That took quite a while but little by little I build excellent eating habits. Then I moved on to work on my mindset and being and staying positive. I always take things one day at a time and never beat myself up for failing, I just pick myself up and start over again by making improvements.
- Keeping up Self Control and exercising Will Power greatly relate to taking your goals at bite sizes rather than focusing on the huge thing! Create milestones that will get you to your goal and have a reward associated with each milestone you reach.
All of these points work fabulously and I am a living proof! But success with Self Control don’t happen over night. Most importantly, connect your Self Control to a bigger Purpose in life you live for. A goal that you have, something that motivates you on a personal level and keep that motivation at the forefront of your mind! Utilizing the 5 steps above to ‘HELP’ your self control daily and envisioning your goal and motivation will be the catalyst that will bring you closer to your goals! STAY STRONG ON YOUR PATH!
